George Sturgis is a successful executive manager and project management leader with over forty-five years of experience in engineering, construction, construction management, evaluation, design and overall project management for surface and underground mining and civil operations in the US, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and Asia. In the specialized area of shaft construction and design, Mr. Sturgis has been a part of teams for the review, design, construction, and commissioning of thirty-four shafts. George’s executive and project management skillset encompasses project controls, project management plan creation, resource management and field operations. George pioneered the use of Monte Carlo simulation as a component of cost and schedule risk management planning.
George is currently a private consultant in the mining, petroleum, and underground construction industries. He retired as Vice President for Project Development from Hecla Mining where he was specifically recruited to lead a newly formed division and hold full responsibility over major project selection and execution. Prior to joining Hecla Mining, George founded and operated Triple Constraint Solutions, a project management services company successfully serving the mining industry. Through Triple Constraint Solutions, George successfully completed several critically important underground and surface mining operations in Finland, Australia, South Africa, Burkina Faso, and Ghana. George also launched and managed operations in the Philippines and Taiwan on behalf of US construction and design firms.
George obtained his Bachelors of Science in Geological Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. He holds an MBA from the Whitman School at Syracuse University and a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University. George is a certified a Project Management Professional, a Certified Professional Constructor, a Certified Construction Manager, and a Registered Member of SME. George serves as an Industry Advisor to the US Department of Energy WIPP facility, an ABET Program Evaluator in Geological Engineering, and a member of the Colorado School of Mines Mining Department Industry Advisory Committee. He is a member of several professional organizations including the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering, Mining & Metallurgical Society of America, and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration where he served as a Foundation Trustee. George is recognized as a Qualified Professional for both Mining and Minerals Project Costing, Infrastructure, Management by the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America. George was presented the SME Ben F. Dickerson, III Award, the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Academic Involvement, and the SME John T. Boyd Challenge award.
