Official Test Scores

GRE test scores (Colorado School of Mines institution code: 4073): Most graduate degree programs at Mines require completion of a standardized test as part of the admissions process. Please check the academic program pages to determine if the program you are applying to requires the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). The most commonly required standardized test at Mines is the GRE. We accept GRE scores from tests taken within the past five years. Students applying to the Applied Physics (M.S. or Ph.D.) program and for financial aid must submit General GRE and Physics subject test scores. If you are not applying for aid within the Physics department, you are only required to submit General GRE scores. The division of Economics and Business will accept GMAT scores in place of GRE scores.

English Proficiency

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores (Colorado School of Mines institution code: 4073): Students whose native language is not English must submit acceptable TOEFL scores as part of the application process. Mines requires a minimum score of 550 paper-based test or 213 computer-based test or 79 internet-based test with minimum section scores as shown below. Tests must have been taken within the past two years to be accepted. The graduate office will accept a copy of your original score report if older than two years, but the department may request that you retake the test once your application has gone on to review.

Internet TOEFL Computer TOEFL Paper TOEFL
Reading 20 20 54
Listening 21 21 55
Writing 17 22 55
Total 79 213 550

If you have completed a university degree program in the United States or in an English speaking country, you do NOT have to submit TOEFL scores. We also recommend students submit TWE scores, however this is not a requirement. If the TOEFL test is not offered in your country, we will also accept an IELTS score of at least 6.5. Please note that TOEIC exam results cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.

For your convenience, an INTERLINK Language Center (ESL) is offered here at Mines. For more information contact INTERLINK Language Center. Successful completion of the INTERLINK program may entitle academically qualified students to begin their academic studies without a TOEFL score.
