POLICIES AT MINES

This website provides centralized access and organization for university-wide policies.      

What is a university policy?

A university policy is a governing principle formally approved to provide assistance in the conduct of university affairs.  University policies apply across the university and have impact on a substantial segment of the campus population.  University policies also authorize or constrain actions to enhance the university mission and operational efficiency; mitigate and manage institutional risk; and in some cases, ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

At the Colorado School of Mines, university policies are created and revised through one of the following mechanisms:

  • Faculty Handbook Committee
  • Administrative Policy Process

 ensure that key constituents have the opportunity for input into the development of policies.  New policies that follow the Administrative Policy Process should be written using a common template.  The template is intended to serve as a guide to help members of the Mines' community write and create structure for policies.  Older administrative policies will be moved into this template over time.     

UNIVERSITY POLICIES

HIGHER EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY ACT

The Higher Education Opportunity Act (Public Law 110-135) (HEOA) was passed by Congress in 2008 as a reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The 2008 law requires that we publish this notice of the availability of institutional as well as financial aid information, and includes a variety of other disclosure and reporting requirements with which the Colorado School of Mines must comply. A summary of Mines’ reports, disclosures and data meeting HEOA requirements can be found at the link below. A hard copy of this information is available by request from the Office of Planning and Policy Analysis.

 FAIR CAMPAIGN PRACTICES ACT (C.R.S. § 1-45-117)

The Colorado Fair Campaign Practices Act (FCPA) prohibits state government and its officials from expending public money from any source, or making contributions to influence the outcome of a political campaign, ballot issue or referendum. As a state institution of higher education, the Colorado School of Mines, its employees and students are required to abide by FCPA regulations.

COLORADO INDEPENDENT ETHICS COMMISSION

Also linked here are statements from the Colorado Independent Ethics Commission related to specific activities that Mines' employees may encounter.  Ethics Commission statements, like university policies, are intended to guide behavior.  They are different from university policies in that they are written by an independent commission that reports to the state.
