Matlab

Vendor: The MathWorks

Platforms: MathWorks maintains a web-page of supported operating systems.

General Description: The MathWorks web-site describes Matlab as "a high-level language and interactive environment that enables you to perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming languages such as C, C++, and Fortran."

Availability: For classroom/lab availability see http://inside.mines.edu/Campus-Computing-Labs. Matlab is not available on desktops for free.

Scope of License: Educational licenses for instructional use are purchased for and assigned to specific classroom labs. Some departments have purchased a limited number of Academic Research licenses for use by their faculty.

Licensing Mechanisms: All labs and some desktops are authenticated against a central license server.  Some desktop installations are dedicated exclusively to that machine.

Expiration: Licensing is perpetual once purchased, though maintenance is required in order to receive updates.

Obtaining: Any non-instructional use, including thesis and dissertation research, requires an Academic Research license.  It is the responsibility of the end-user to acquire the appropriate licensing, either from their department, or directly from Mathworks.
